Our 36 Day God Adventure in the Bandundu
Day 17 : Wednesday, September 21, 2011
Today is our grandson Liam's 2nd birthday. He is our miracle baby with a heart that's bigger than life itself! Mamie wishes she was there to celebrate with you, little man. Can you hear me singing "Happy birthday to you..."? Gros bisous!!
Not a great night's sleep but looking forward to a quiet day. Got to get caught up on laundry. We have a meeting at 10 with the mayor and authorities for what they call "civilities". The rest of the time I want to work on my course assignment. Just waiting for breakfast - not sure what the hold up is.
It seems that the other members of the mission team won't be joining us here as previously planned. That's disappointing for us and for Pastor Pierre who have been investing in this training since the beginning. We really believe they are the biggest losers in not participating and seeing and experiencing this firsthand.
OK, so the meetings were more numerous than thought. I wondered if we would ever get beyond all these niceties. Such a big cultural thing here - for us, it means nothing. We also stopped off at the church where Mama Fifi has her women's mission training. These are young women who followed a 9 month programme studying things like English, French, Math and some practical subjects like nursing basics, nutrition, house cleaning, childcare. The idea is that these women can be placed in families and work, all the while with a Christian witness.
Fiinally we got back to the Guest house. The rest of the day I spent in our room or sitting outside - reading, working on my course, fixing up our flip chart pages for the training, resting. I have to say it was so much lovelier a setting in Tono. Here, we are back in an urban setting.
Very hot day. Just sitting, the sweat pours off of you. Other than maybe one hour of electricity in the morning, the rest of the day we were without. Thankfully it gave us just enough time to check our emails. Lindsey had sent me a note saying that she had told Liam that Mamie said hi and happy birthday. He went immediately to the computor and wanted to skype me. When she told him that mamie couldn't skype, he totally lost it and cried his heart out! Oh, how I love that little boy :) !
We left windows open hoping for a bit of air - so hot! But then we were bugged all night by mosquitos. We'll have to figure out how to put up our mosquito net so that we can get a good night's sleep.
